Alfred Kralik pense qu'il ne rencontrera jamais la jeune fille avec qui il maintient une correspondance et dont il est tombé amoureux. Et pourtant il s'agit de Klara Novak qui travaille comme lui dans la magasin d'Hugo Matuschek. Hugo soupçonne Alfred d'être l'amant de sa femme et le renvoie. Quand il découvre qu'il s'agit d'un autre vendeur, il le reprend. C'est alors qu'Alfred découvre que sa mystérieuse correspondante n'était autre que Klara que, sans le savoir, il l'aimait profondément...
