Après un tournage dantesque, le film a couté énormément d'argent, Dino DE LAURENTIS se demande s'il pourra rentabiliser ce remake du King Kong de 1933. La campagne de publicité est colossale, mais lepublic suit: sorti dans une combinaison record de 34 salles à Paris, le film totalise un très beau 149 000 entrées, faisant taire les détracteurs du film et ceux de la sublime Jessica LANGE qui n'est pas aidée par un rôle épais comme une feuille de papier à cigarette et dont la débilité la suivra, à tort, durant des années.
"la belle et le clochard" continue d'engranger des entrées, mais ce n'est pas suffisant pour battre Kong. La semaine de noël lui sera sans doute plus favorable pour reprendre son trône.
Derrière c'est la débandade. Des comédies plus ou moins réussies, tentent de se faire une place dans ce marché très concurrentiel....

A propos de King Kong, je voudrais bousculer les idées reçus concernant le premier (celui de 1933).
En effet si vous suivez un peu le BO US à travers Variety ou divers sites internet qui ont relayé leurs chiffres vous devez savoir que le film a rapporté 5M$ rental aux USA, ce qui est énorme pour un film de l’époque, d’autant qu’on peut difficilement faire plus culte. Oui mais le film ne fut pas un gros succès en réalité.
Premièrement le film n’apparait dans les tableaux de Variety qu’en 1978, après une cinquième (petite) exploitation. De plus en 1992 Variety revoit le chiffre à 4M$.
Donc combien a-t-il rapporté en 1933 ? Alors qu’à l’époque un film était considéré comme un succès à partir de ½ million de dollars rental et comme un blockbuster à partir d’un million, King Kong rapporta 745 000$ rental aux USA, ce qui le classe aux alentour de la trentième place du BO annuel.
D’ailleurs quand on regarde les recettes hebdomadaires des villes clés de Variety on s’aperçoit que partout où il sortait, après une première semaine remarquable (il a battu quasiment tous les records de première semaine dans les salles qui l’exploitait), il s’effondrait littéralement la deuxième semaine. Il n’est pas resté plus de 4 semaines d’affilé dans une de ces salles, ce qui était vraiment peu.
C’est à l’étranger qu’il marcha le mieux. Pour un film 500 000$ rental hors du sol américain était une grosse somme, peu atteinte. Hors il en rapporta 1 116 000$, ce qui en faisait l’un des 5 plus gros succès de l’année à l’étranger. Au final il finit dans le top 20 mondial de l’année.
Il y eut une reprise en 1937-38 ou il rapporta 150 000$ rental aux USA et 151 000$ rental à l’étranger.
En 1941-42 il rapporta encore 170 000$ rental aux states et 515 000$ en-dehors.
En 1952 d’après les relevés hebdos de Variety, il semble qu’il marcha bien mais je n’ai pas de chiffre plus précis. Quand à la sortie de 1977 on dirait qu’elle fut confidentielle.

Hello. Je ne ferais pas de comparaison entre les différents King Kong, à différentes époques.
Je reconnais juste l'originalité et la puissance de cette histoire, que seul le cinéma américain
est capable de réaliser avec l'ampleur à toutes les époques de ses moyens.
